At approximately 2:44 p.m. yesterday, a devastating fire broke out at Champion Auto Parts, located at 45864 Usher Lane, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting a swift and courageous response from local fire and rescue teams.

Upon receiving the distress call, emergency personnel rushed to the scene to find the 150×75 building fully consumed by flames. The intensity of the inferno posed significant challenges, compounded by the perilous collapse of a section of the structure.

In the midst of the chaos, one employee was discovered with severe burn injuries. Without hesitation, EMS teams sprang into action, swiftly assessing the situation and calling for immediate MEDEVAC assistance. Thanks to their quick thinking and expertise, the injured individual was swiftly airlifted to a specialized burn center, ensuring they receive the critical care they urgently require.

The valiant efforts of personnel from various departments, including apparatus from St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles counties, were pivotal in containing the blaze and preventing further devastation. Despite the ferocity of the fire, no additional injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office working diligently to uncover the origins of this tragic event. Additionally, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) played a crucial role in safeguarding the area, swiftly securing the power supply to ensure the safety of all responders and nearby residents.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by this incident, including the brave first responders who risked their lives to protect our community. We extend our deepest gratitude to them for their unwavering commitment and selfless dedication in the face of adversity.
